Ipswich Town column: Kieran McKenna will be a better manager from Premier League experience after Wolves loss

Another Saturday, another disappointment at Portman Road.

As I entered the ground you could feel a slight sense of optimism; a belief that if Town could win then maybe, just maybe, they could claw themselves out of the depths of relegation.

It's easy for me to say now, but I never quite saw it and if Town had beat Wolves 5-0, I'm still not sure it would've made a great deal of difference in the grand scheme of things.

Ultimately, it was another game lost and the 10th at Portman Road this season. That hurts, especially as it was a similar 90 minutes to what we've seen all season.

A lightening start where I really enjoyed the first 45. We were the better team, got the goal and it felt like a game that was there for us to win.

Sadly, the second half felt like the opposite. Wolves turned it on and we were so poor. We looked a league below our opposition, which is ultimately where we're due to find ourselves next season.

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira admitted he changed his side’s system at half-time. It showed. Why didn't we do that? Can’t we do that?

I love Kieran McKenna but I do feel he's come up short at times this season. The substitutes felt late but also bizarre, and it was alarming to see how quickly Wolves figured us out and how we were unable to come up with a response.

Kieran is a magnificent manager – and we should remember this season will be a massive learning curve for him, as much as the players – but there's no doubt he has things to improve on, before he can really cut it at this level.

I've loved Ipswich Town being a Premier League club, but we are nowhere near ready to compete at this level, though I do hope we get another go at it soon.

Seven games left, going into Sunday’s game at fourth-placed Chelsea (2pm). That still feels a lot, doesn’t it?

Well, we backed the boys last season during the highs, and we'll certainly back them now during the lows.
